Tourism Against Poverty

IC
TP is again calling on the Travel and Tourism industry to get behind its core campaign – Tourism Against Poverty

A figure revealed by British Airways on its Change for Good Envelope this month bring home the nature of the difference between have’s and have not’s in a very human way to which we can all relate.

“50p will buy enough Vitamin A capsules to protect 20 children against blindness for a year”

It’s a simple enough figure that bears some thinking about in a quiet moment. Because it shows just how far a small amount can go to make a real change in real lives. An amount that is totally insignificant to anyone in the tourism Industry. And it’s a tribute to those travel companies and UNICEF who are committed to the cause.

This micro-level humanitarian response can be replicated at the macro level where more than a biillion people live in extreme poverty – the kind that can readily kill.

In two months time the industrialised world’s leaders will meet at Gleneagles Scotland at the G8 meeting where Tony Blair will press forward with initiatives to eliminate debt for the world’s poorest nations. World leaders have already committed to canceling more than $100 billion of poor country debts under the World Bank and IMF initiatives. To date, less than half has actually been cancelled. Heavily Indebted Poor Countries in Africa still spend some 15% of their tax revenues in servicing their debts.

There may be sound institutional reasons for the delays related to poor countries meeting pro market economy targets - but the bottom line is that the debt hangs like a dead weight handicap as they try to compete in a globalising world. In fact the real issue is how to rapidly eliminate this debt. In popular jargon the playing field isn’t level and they are falling further behind for reasons which may once have been valid but which are less so in a more caring pro development international community. One whose course has been altered by the Poverty Summits at the start of the 21st century in Monterey (debt relief): Doha (Fair Trade): Johannesburg (sustainability) and the New York (Millennium Development Goals0

May 16th has been declared World Debt Day. It’s a good time to think about these matters. And to think about joining ICTP – which is dedicated to bringing these kind of issues to the attention of the Travel & Tourism sector. We are the one service sector where all poor countries are exporters and which can make a market driven difference.

Membership fees are a “no brainer’ – 15% goes to the fight against HIV aids and the balance to support our awareness raising initiatives. As a not for profit initiative of E~Turbo News and Green Global village, ICTP is committed to help in the war on poverty. We’ll also send you a white wristband – so you can join the millions of ordinary people worldwide who are demonstrating their solidarity with the world’s poor.
