San Juan County is the newest member of the International Council of Tourism Partners. San Juan County is located in the US state of Utah, where it is referred to as “Utah’s Canyon Country.” San Juan County encompasses an area of almost 8,000 square miles or 5,186,075 acres (20,700 sq kilometers). This vast region features the greatest archaeological site density in North America, with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 meters and featuring ecosystems from Red Rock desert through Alpine Tundra.

Charlie DeLorme, Economic Development and Visitor Services Director for San Juan County, said: “We are proud to be the newest destination member for International Council of Tourism Partners. ICTP’s philosophies and goals are in line with our organization’s objectives.”

Charlie DeLorme was appointed Economic Development and Visitor Services Director in August of 2006 by San Juan County, Utah commissioners. From 1983 through 2001, DeLorme was the CEO of W.R.E., Inc., a Utah firm originally founded in 1947, where he was a pioneer of educational sustainable zero-impact adventure travel, providing expeditions and educational travel services in previous companies for, among others, National Geographic, the Smithsonian, and the Archaeological Conservancy.

Geoffrey Lipman, President of the International Council of Tourism Partners, said, “ICTP is thrilled to have San Juan County join our alliance. We are looking forward to working together to develop new and exciting business strategies to address existing challenges and explore new opportunities to further enhance San Juan County’s market position and brand equity.”

San Juan County provides a perfect, centralized base of travel to world-renowned features, such as national parks and monuments, including the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Canyonlands, Arches, Lake Powell, Natural Bridges, Hovenweep, and Mesa Verde. State parks include Edge of the Cedars Museum and the great Goosenecks of the San Juan River. With such natural treasures, it isn’t any wonder why San Juan County chose to align itself with ICTP’s mission to provide quality, green travel and tourism opportunities.

HAWAII, BRUSSELS, It is right to welcome President Obama’s new support for the tourism sector and to congratulate Roger Dow and the US travel and tourism industry for their brilliant repositioning of the sector in recent years – including their successful lobbying for substantial new funding for marketing and promotion, and long overdue border facilitation.

So, too, the steps by the major organizations – the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the World Economic Forum (WEF) – to encourage world leaders to recognize the importance of the sector, to rally round the accelerated introduction of e-visas, and to sensitise the G20 to the job creation opportunities in travel and tourism and related sectors.

The International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP) fully supports these and other related initiatives, but we would like to add the following points of emphasis:

    • ·       As implementation is put in place, parallel, coherent consideration should be given to encouraging tourism flows and facilitation for poor and emerging states, as well as building fundamental green growth elements at the core.
    • ·       There is no activity as valuable to the future of the poor and emerging economies as travel and tourism, and this dimension should be mainstreamed in all national and international strategies to boost tourism flows and streamline border crossings.
    • ·       In the challenging socio-economic times ahead, funds to support the many initiatives identified as essential for successful travel and tourism will be increasingly limited.
    • Strategy and action should incorporate the same concepts that are increasingly accepted in the global Climate Change, Trade and Poverty Alleviation discourse: the poor and emerging countries need finance, technology and capacity building to realize their potential and make the critical transition to a green growth future.

(The Region Initiative (TRI) is a tri-regional umbrella of tourism-related organizations, which functions as a link between three regions - South Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. It offers blended tours packages, consultancy, networking of tourism organizations, tourism research opportunities, marketing of small tourism stakeholders, promotion of need of usage of renewable energies, and advocates sustainable tourism and ecotourism.

TRI believes that tourism is one of the most effective tools for peace that can be achieved through tourism, and tourism should be considered not only a revenue provider but a harmony and peace generator and should, therefore, be supported by United Nations bodies as a peace industry.

TRI believes that the agendas of governments are sometimes contrary to the needs and demands of the tourism industry. In South Asia, governments of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Afghanistan have different political and diplomatic conflicts, and this is the lead reason that the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) has failed to establish interaction and strong networking in the field of tourism. There are also certain conflicts among Central Asian republics and also in Eastern Europe countries. Therefore, the chance of a solid networking and connection among tourism ministries of these countries is more myth than reality.

The Region Initiative stresses that governments should provide direct financial support to those who are following a path of sustainable tourism instead of harming nature by adopting mass and uncontrolled tourism in fragile environments of Central Asia, South Asia and Eastern Europe. TRI demands that governments should provide financial support of small stakeholders for creating balance, otherwise it would become difficult for small stakeholders to get their share of tourism revenue and difficult for those who are trying to following the path of sustainable tourism.

In May 2010, regional intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, tour operators, and other tourism industry stakeholders of South Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe were invited to institute a stronger and closer relationship. Armenia, Bangladesh, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, India, Iran, Pakistan, Nepal, Tajikistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan joined hands and has established a strong base for cost effective tours, sharing information and knowledge, and obtaining benefits from the strength of its members. The idea behind this networking and collaboration is the promotion of the small stakeholder of the tourism industry, including accommodation providers, tour operators, tourist guides, and communities providing community-based tourism.

TRI’s President, Agha Iqrar Haroon, said: “Today, world peace is victim of conflicts ranging from geographical to conceptual and from political to religious. The agonies of humans are growing on multidimensional levels, and are one of the core reasons for financial, political, and social unrest – there is a lack of ‘oneness’ and an absence of ‘interfaith harmony’ among societies. TRI is pleased to work with ICTP to achieve peace through tourism.”

Achieving harmony among races, cultures, continents, and religions is a major issue for individuals and groups that feel pain for millions of poor, powerless, homeless, and hopeless people around the world. Meeting each other and living together for some time helps to understand each other, and tourism has always been an important tool for such meetings. Tourism has long worked as a modality for bringing harmony among people, and exposure of the East to the West historically became possible through tourists.

President Haroon added: “TRI attempts to bring about peace, harmony, tolerance, and oneness through The Region Initiative. It will not only develop and promote tourism in the region, but it will also attempt to achieve more harmony and peace in the region. This region is very diversified, not only in races but also in beliefs from Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Agnosticism, and Atheism. Bridging South Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe is the perfect attempt of achieving oneness and peace.”

Blending and connecting tour operators and tourism bodies to offer tours year round is also an objective of TRI. Eastern European tour operators can offer tours to their clients to India, Nepal, and Pakistan when extreme weather makes people shy about traveling to Eastern Europe. Companies of Nepal and India can offer tourism to Eastern Europe or Central Asia when temperatures go as high as 52c in many parts of this sun continent. Tourism stakeholders can enjoy good business year round if they have better reach and networking in other regions. Extreme weather conditions that occur during the winter and summer, along with extreme monsoons, can only be experienced in these three regions of the world. Therefore, these regions having an extreme diversification in fauna, flora, topography, culture, customs, and social fabric and yet are strongly connected through history and cultural roots.

The International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP) Chairman Juergen T. Steinmetz said: “We are pleased to work with The Region Initiative to ICTP, and we are looking forward to working with them to further expand the reach of our mission.”

Maurice Strong to receive prestigious new accolade at World Green Tourism conference and exhibition in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, 23 November, 2011: The Honourable Maurice F. Strong, Senior Advisor to the 2012 Rio+20 Summit, has been named as the first recipient of the inaugural World Green Tourism Award in recognition of his pivotal role in shaping the global sustainable development agenda, and in recognising the potential of Travel & Tourism to make a contribution to mainstream green growth transformation.

Strong will receive the award at the World Green Tourism conference and exhibition, taking place at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from December 5-7, where he will be invited to deliver the valedictory address.

Sponsored by Etihad Airways in partnership with the International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP), the award recognises Strong’s outstanding efforts to encourage thought leadership and action for green initiatives in travel and tourism.

Among his many public and private sector appointments, Strong has served as Secretary General of the 1972 Stockholm Environment Conference, and as the First Head of the UN Environment Programme. In 1992, he was Secretary General of the Rio Earth Summit, the United Nations conference on environment and development.

During the Rio Conference, he proposed an “Agenda 21 for Travel & Tourism.” This became the basic framework for global programmes by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and UNWTO to start the development of a travel and tourism sector that was environmentally, socially, and culturally sustainable.

“I am delighted to receive this inaugural World Green Tourism Award, at such a critical time in mankind’s history,” said Strong. “We still have a small window of opportunity to make the fundamental ‘change of-course’ called for by leaders at the Earth Summit in 1992, to effectively manage our impact on our sustainability.

“The future of human life on Earth depends on what we do, or fail to do in this generation. It will require a degree of cooperation beyond anything we have yet experienced - all elements of the economy and society will have to respond in unprecedented ways. I have long believed that Travel & Tourism can and must be a leadership sector in this transformation. . You are the people who are well positioned to undertake this while experiencing and protecting the wonders of our planet as your business is linking nature, development and humanity. You have a huge stake in and a special responsibility to lead our response to these challenges”

Strong was selected by a distinguished panel of judges chaired by Professor Geoffrey Lipman, President of ICTP along with Erica Harms, Global Sustainable Tourism Council; Laila Yousef Al Hassan, Manager of Communications and Marketing, Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD); Vijay Poonoosamy, VP International & Public Affairs, Etihad Airways; and Hisham Zaazou, Senior Assistant Minister of Tourism Egypt.

“Throughout his distinguished career as a public servant and entrepreneur, Maurice Strong has consistently identified the travel and tourism industry as a key sector in sustainable development,” said Lipman. “He understands the fact that the environment is at the core of travel and tourism’s product and thus it must be at the core of its strategy, policy and action. He continues to do so, half a century on and is an inspiration to all of us.”

Lipman added: “The World Green Tourism Award was launched this year to serve as an inspiration to the travel and tourism sector as it shifts to a green growth paradigm. Delivering the inaugural award at the World Green Tourism Conference in Abu Dhabi is a significant milestone, given that the event is the leading global focal point on sustainable travel and tourism. With the Durban Climate meeting underway and next year’s Rio + 20 in sight, the timing of the award is also highly relevant.”

Organised by Streamline Marketing Group, World Green Tourism, the first commercial conference and exhibition specifically for the sustainable tourism sector, is hosted by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. It is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, ADTA’s Chairman.

(Forimmediaterelease.net) At the World Travel Market (WMT) in London, the President of the International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP), Geoffrey Lipman, presented the ICTP Visionary Award to Louis D'Amore, President and Founder of the International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT). Mr. D’Amore received the award at the IIPT Climate Change seminar held at WTM yesterday.

Mr. Lipman said: “I have known Louis for 30 years. He is a true visionary and works tirelessly to spread his vision around the world for peace through tourism. He is so richly deserving of this award.”

Louis D’Amore has been instrumental in promoting the travel and tourism industry as the world’s first “Global Peace Industry” since the founding of IIPT in 1986. In 1992, following the UN Conference on Environment and Development (Rio Summit), he developed the world’s first Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Sustainable Tourism for the Canadian tourism industry. He also conducted the world’s first international study on Codes of Conduct and best practices in Sustainable Tourism for the United Nations.

The International Institute for Peace through Tourism is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering and facilitating tourism initiatives which contribute to international understanding and cooperation, an improved quality of environment, the preservation of heritage, and through these initiatives, helping to bring about a peaceful and sustainable world. (Forimmediaterelease.net) HALIEWA, Hawaii - The International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP) is pleased to announce that the North Shore Chamber of Commerce from Haleiwa, Hawaii, will be joining the organization as a founding member. ICTP was incorporated in the small, historic town of Haleiwa located on Oahu’s North Shore in the year 2000.

ICTP Chairman Juergen T. Steinmetz said: “With the official launch of our new destination alliance, ICTP, taking place in London on Tuesday at the World Travel Market, we are very pleased to be able to welcome our host town of 11 years as another founding destination member for our organization. This feels to us like a full circle moment.

I hope the entire Northshore community will play a very active part in our organization. This is a chance for the Northshore to become a shining example and leader in Hawaii for international tourism. It's an opportunity for the Northshore and Hawaii to network on a world stage”

Mr. Steinmetz has personally been a long-time resident of the North Shore community, and explained that tourism is a major part of the area’s economy. He said, “Anyone wanting to get a true feeling of Hawaii’s beautiful nature, world-class surfing, excellent restaurants, and unique shopping - and experience the Aloha spirit – must visit Oahu’s North Shore.”

A leisurely drive of around 35 miles from Waikiki, Haleiwa town on the famous North Shore on the island of Oahu, hosts some of the world’s best surfing. Renowned for its legendary beaches, Haleiwa is a favorite refuge for Hawaii’s residents and a must-see for visitors. Nowhere else on Oahu will you find quaint shops and cafes housed in plantation-era buildings and world-famous surf spots.

The mission of the North Shore Chamber of Commerce is to promote, maintain, and encourage the historic, cultural, civic, and economic welfare of the North Shore through research and education. For more information, visit: www.gonorthshore.org .
