HALEIWA, Hawaii, USA; BRUSSELS, Belgium; VICTORIA, Seychelles; BALI, Indonesia - Addressing the Responsible Tourism Forum at ITB Singapore, Professor Geoffrey Lipman, ICTP President, focused on the pivotal role of destinations in the green growth transformation.

He noted that “in a world where austerity is the main economic determinant, there is an urgent need for innovation to simultaneously combat the increasingly weak market outlook and capitalize on the increasingly strong Internet mobility linkages.”

Lipman said that while the economic outlook from every government and industry source foresees continuing low economic performance and high unemployment, green growth provides an opportunity to buck the trend. “The paradigm shift will allow the industry to benefit from the inexorable demand for travel, particularly in the higher growth emerging markets and to capitalize on its unique role as a job creator and development catalyst. We can be a green growth leader if we make the tough choices now. A key choice is to translate that strategic global opportunity into decisive actions at the destination level where the real economic benefits, and equally importantly, the environmental impacts of more travelers are felt.”

He added that despite the coming austerity years, there will be some key opportunities to fuel the transformation:

    - The money from emissions trading should be plowed back into industry carbon fixes. We need a fair share of climate adaptation funding and must not be overcharged and under recompensed.

    - The development agenda rightly continues to be a high geopolitical priority for funding agencies, and it is increasingly recognized that travelers are vital sources of foreign trade, investment, and jobs – particularly nature and heritage-based ecotourism. The Millennium Development Goals Review gives a three-year window to press the case.

    - Infrastructure improvements to get the economy moving are huge travelism plays – fast trains, superhighways, mega-airports, and ports are all primarily used by travelers rather than commuters.

    - The new phenomenon known as “crowdsourcing" over the Internet presents huge possibilities for green travel to match investment funds - particularly in emerging and developing states. Similarly “micro-finance” projects present huge possibilities for green travel investment.

Lipman said that these issues would be priority action areas for ICTP’s “bottom of the pyramid” destination-focused advocacy in 2013. “Simply put, destinations committing to quality service and green growth should have a better chance of accessing available funds, and we will work to help give ICTP members a competitive edge,” Lipman concluded.

HALEIWA, Hawaii, USA; BRUSSELS, Belgium; VICTORIA, Seychelles; BALI, Indonesia ICTP President Professor Geoffrey Lipman. together with colleagues from Victoria University in Melbourne Australia and Oxford Brookes University UK, published Green Growth and Travelism: Letters from Leaders, which was dedicated to Maurice Strong, Secretary General of the Rio Earth Summit and presented to him at Rio+20 earlier this year.

    The lead authors

    • Identified Green Growth as the new geopolitical paradigm to respond to the big social, economic, environment and climate challenges of today and the population driven resource challenges of tomorrow.
    • ·Suggested how Travelism – the Travel and Tourism value chain consisting of supply, demand and the broader destination focused economy they create – might play a leading role in the transformation because it delivers on jobs, trade and development, as well as spreading happiness through human interaction.
    • · Asked nearly 50 government, industry and civil society thought leaders to give their views. in a focused strategy oriented way, on the challenges and opportunities from the intersection of these evolving paradigms.

The result is a clear demonstration of the potential of the sector to make a seriously powerful contribution if it is sustainably managed.

ICTP intends to “blog” one of these letters, every month as part of its “green and quality” commitment. The first is a thought provoking piece by Tom Enders CEO of EADS, the parent of Airbus, reflecting on the big finance and skills challenges facing the sector in the coming decades. Here’s a sample Between now and 2020 the world’s airlines will spend the $20 billion pay to comply with the EU’s Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). That would be enough to implement an upgraded European air traffic management system, which would cut emissions by 10%; to build enough biofuel refineries to meet the EU’s target of producing two million tonnes by 2020; to develop an entirely new aircraft model that would provide a significant step towards our target of halving aircraft emissions by 2050; and still have enough left over to educate about 20,000 engineers. Europe needs 12,000 aeronautical engineers a year, but only 9000 graduate and nearly half of them switch to other careers when they qualify. It’s crazy”

Tom’s article which was also carried as an op-ed in European Voice can be accessed at www.greengrowth2050.com.  Comments are welcome.

Jet Airways, based in Mumbai, India, commenced its operations in May 1993. It is an airline that has pioneered concepts like Through-Check-in, City Check-in, Web and Kiosk check-in, SMS check-in, automated tickets at travel agency locations, e-ticketing, JetMobile, and the unique five-tier frequent flier program JetPrivilege in India.

Today the International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP) had a very active and successful panel discussion at the 18th World Route Development Forum being held in Abu Dhabi. Routes and ICTP further strengthened their partnership for upcoming Routes events.

In front of a larger than expected audience, ICTP President Professor Geoffrey Lipman, together with top executives from Ethiad Airlines, the World Bank, and the Seychelles government, conducted an active panel discussion about airline connectivity, which was attended by top airline and tourism executives.

World Routes officially opened today by Abu Dhabi Airports Company’s (ADAC) CEO, James Bennett. The event, which takes place over 4 days, will attract 2,800 senior professionals who represent over 300 airlines and 750 airports as well as numerous governments, destinations, and tour operators.

There are more airline delegates registered this year than at any previous event, representing all leading airlines including Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France/KLM, Etihad, Emirates, United Airlines, LATAM, COPA, South African, Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and Qantas as well as airports from around the globe. The event will also see more senior executives in attendance than in previous years, with 40 airline CEOs and 250 airport CEOs and board members as well as 16 tourism ministers registered to attend. Carriers which have confirmed that their CEO will be in attendance in Abu Dhabi include Kenya Airways, Air Arabia, CSA-Czech Airlines, Etihad Airways, Vueling, and Air Seychelles.

On the first day of the event, the World Route Development Strategy Summit, which takes place alongside World Routes, was launched with a keynote speech by ADAC CEO, James E. Bennett. The summit provided a platform for industry leaders to discuss key on-going topics that impact this dynamic and ever-evolving industry. Key topics highlighted during the summit included: taxation, rising oil prices, aeropolitics, environmental factors, sustainable route development, economic development, and general regional perspectives on aviation and its potential for growth.

Along with the summit opening, Routes held a joint press conference with Abu Dhabi Airports Company to announce the launch of the event and to engage with the 180 accredited journalists on Route Development strategies and trends. In addition, the first day of the forum started with meetings held between airlines and airports to seek and plan for new routes.

David Stroud, Executive Vice President, Routes commented: “This year’s World Routes might well be the largest commercial aviation event ever held, and it is more than appropriate that it takes place in the Middle East, the fastest-growing aviation market in the world. The event demonstrates in an impressive way how dynamic the global aviation sector is, despite the challenging economic and regulatory environment.

“The format is unique, as it is the only event which brings together hundreds of airlines and airports from all corners of the world. Delegates meet for tightly-scheduled, face-to-face discussions over 3 days with the aim to discuss and agree on new air services. In total, around 16,000 meetings will take place in Abu Dhabi.”

HE Ali Majed Al Mansoori, Chairman of ADAC, said: “The Middle East region has registered a 17.3% growth in passenger traffic in the first 8 months of 2012, as per the traffic report released by IATA, becoming the fastest-growing region in the world. ADAC is extremely proud to host key aviation leaders from around the globe here in the heart of this dynamic region. This world-class event will provide a platform to map out plans for growth in the aviation industry, but most importantly will allow Abu Dhabi to showcase its world-class airports and aviation services and to work even closer with airlines in delivering new routes and destinations to Abu Dhabi airports.”

“The aviation sector is one of the 12 sectors that form the Emirate’s engines of economic, social and cultural growth, and diversification,” said Al Mansoori, “Our leaders’ recognition that this sector is essential for connecting the Emirate to the world, has been translated to significant investment in air transport, enabling Abu Dhabi International Airport to become one of the fastest-growing international airport hubs. This commitment has also allowed Abu Dhabi to establish itself as a global center for tourism, trade, and industry in the 16 years since Abu Dhabi last hosted the World Route Development Forum.”

This year’s event program has been extended to include full days on both Saturday, September 29, and Sunday, September 30, with delegates invited to “Experience Abu Dhabi;” attend the World Route Development Strategy Summit; and further enjoy the unique one-to-one networking, briefing, and meeting opportunities. Exclusive Route Exchange Airline Briefings by airlines such as Etihad, Air Canada, Southwest, Iberia, and Aeromexico will also allow airlines to brief airports directly on their requirements and various market opportunities.

This marks the first time the event has returned to a previous host city. Back in 1996, Abu Dhabi’s downtown Hilton Hotel was the setting for the first hosted World Routes event. Sixteen years later, delegates will be able to witness for themselves the immense changes that demonstrate how the city’s future as a world-class destination is taking shape.

Routes organizes world-renowned airline and airport networking events through its regional and global Route Development Forums. For more information on the program, please visit www.routesonline.com/events/150/the-18th-world-route-development-forum or visit www.adac.ae .

HALEIWA, Hawaii, USA; BRUSSELS, Belgium; VICTORIA, Seychelles; BALI, Indonesia - International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP) President Prof. Geoffrey Lipman will be a keynote speaker at 20th Global Eco Asia-Pacific Tourism Conference in Cairns, Tropical North Queensland, Australia, on Monday, October 15, to Wednesday, October 17, 2012. He will be speaking about “Green Growth and Travelism... Eco-tourism and Apple Seeds.”

“Green Growth” is the new geopolitical paradigm to respond to the big social, economic, environmental, and climate challenges of today and the population-driven resource challenges of tomorrow. “Travelism” – the “Travel & Tourism” value chain consisting of supply, demand, and the broader destination-focused economy they create – can play a leading role in this transformation, because it delivers on job creation, trade, and development, as well as spreading the happiness of human interaction.

As a contribution to the Rio+20 Earth Summit, we asked nearly 50 government, industry, and civil society thought leaders for their views on the challenges and opportunities from the intersection of these evolving paradigms. The result is a clear demonstration of their vision and the potential of the sector to make a seriously powerful contribution. Ecotourism remains a vital beacon of good practice on this transformation journey.

The challenge now is to channel this “Green Growth” and “Travelism” thinking across the traditional silos of the sector in an age of “disjointed hyper-connectivity” and to make bottom up, joined up thinking as important as the trickle-down approach that dominates the media channels. The answer is “apple seeds” and the next generation.

Professor Geoffrey is Director and “chief disruption architect” of greenearth.travel, a global think tank network, promoting green growth and travelism (travel & tourism) and specializing in strategy, innovation, and funding. Lipman is currently Adjunct Professor at Victoria University Australia, Visiting Professor at Oxford Brookes University UK, and Senior Tourism Research Fellow at George Washington University US. He is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council and an Associate of Cosmos China. He has written and lectured widely on tourism strategy, sustainability and airline liberalization. In 2012, he launched at the Rio+20 Earth Summit a new compendium of leadership ideas from nearly 50 of the best thinkers inside and outside the sector, “Green Growth & Travelism: Letters from Leaders.”

The 20th Global Eco Asia-Pacific Tourism Conference is an ICTP member.

There are a number of seating stations with electrical outlets to charge up a laptop, cell phones, iPads, or PDAs at no cost as well. The airport has flight-tracking screens strategically located so the live radar feed of all flights arriving and departing SRQ can easily be viewed so that one may know exactly where a flight is at any time.

The airport is rolling out some new customer amenities as well. There is a new mobile website available that contains the critical information needed, including airport schedules, flight status, live radar tracking, dining and shopping services, as well as other airport information right from a smart phone. The airport may also be followed on Facebook to learn what is happening at SRQ or to receive special offers from airline partners.
